The United State Cafe is on Haight Street near Ashbury. You walk down a long hall past boutiques of paintings, leather, books, clothes, and at the end is the two rooms of the coffee house. Not at all frantic. An intricate French coffee machine. House coffee is exotic, good and only 20 cents, refills a dime. Blueberry cake with cream cheese icing, 60 cents; carob cake, 55 cents. A pianist in late afternoon plays rippling jazz, making a bad piano sound very good indeed. A small dark green palm, an Indian painting of a blue god and saffron goddess. Very New Haight and very nice.
